Ambassador Penn!

One of our favourite, hunky actors, Sean Penn, has accepted the job title of ‘ambassador at large’ for the Caribbean nation of Haiti, after being offered the position by the nation’s foreign minister Laurent Lamothe while at the Cinema for Peace benefit in Los Angeles on Saturday night.

The I am Sam actor has been assisting the country’s relief efforts ever since the it was struck by a devestating earthquake in 2008. After having received a reward for his humanitarian work, the Hollywood actor told the crowd at the benefit, “I do accept (the job),” before adding that it would be nice to be “called, ‘Hey, Mr Ambassador’.”

The event saw a fabulous total of $5 million (R40 million) raised for the troubled country, with stars splurging their cash in aid of the charitable cause. Some of our favourite spends of the night? Damien Rice dropped $475,000 (R3.8 million) on a guitar owned by Bono, while Julia Roberts’ husband, Danny Moder, placed a $50,000 (R402 000) bid on a trip to Haiti with Sean. Other celebrities who attended the event at the Montague Hotel in Beverly Hills included Demi Moore, Mel Gibson, Kim Kardashian, Hilary Swank, Orlando Bloom, George Clooney and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

We love it when celebs lend their support to charity – a mix of a GLAMOURous red carpet and a soulful cause sounds just perfect!
