How to do a braided topknot

Topknots have been around for ages (I don’t know about you but I wear my hair in one at least once or twice a week). And while I love this trusty ‘do, I think it’s time to give it a bit of a change-up – add a sophisticated edge, if you will!

‘How?’ You may ask. It’s easy: by adding a plait you can take this look from ho-hum to fab in eight easy steps.

1. Spray your whole head with hairspray and gather your hair into a ponytail on the top of your head. (Tipping your head upside down will enable you to get it super high.) This will make the hair sit tighter against the back of your head.

2. Brush the sides of your hair with a wide-tooth comb to catch any fly aways. Comb them towards the ponytail and spray with hair spray.

3. Tug your hair so that the band sits tightly against your scalp. Then divide the hair into 4 sections.

4. Use a small part of one of the sections to hide the elastic, by wrapping the hair around it and securing it with a bobby pin. Keep the rest of that section free.

5. Take the 3 remaining sections and plait them into a classic plait. Secure this with a small, clear elastic.

6. Take the remaining free section and tease with a fine toothcomb.

7. Twist the teased section and the plait together until it bends in on itself, then wrap around the ponytail, securing with bobby pins wherever needed.

8. Pull out a few strands for a messy look, and set the whole head with more hair spray.
