Layer for winter – in six easy outfits!

They say winter is the fashionista’s time to shine – and rightly so: covering up means wearing as much as you can to keep warm, and after all, more is more! In case you’re confused about what to mix and match to look as stylish as ever, here are some layering outfit ideas you can put to good use.

For more layering tips, make sure to check out the August issue of GLAMOUR, in stores on 28 July!

For the office

For the office, you can really dress up – so get those fancy coats, suit pants and heels out! If a maxi- or midi- dress or skirt doesn’t work for you, go for a tailored pants and patterned monochrome sweater over a white shirt. Layer with a pinstriped jacket or thick coat and throw on a scarf. You can also try a throw-on poncho, which is a modern and more stylish take on the classic item.

For a night out

Our cover star Zoe Saldana shows us how to dress up for a night out on the town. A button-down Oxford shirt, leather skinnies and boots are staple items that always go great together. Bundle up over your shirt with vests and other winter essentials, and wear a crop sweater or chunky knit cardigan over it. Accessorise with gold rings and bracelets and complete your look with a red lip and bold eye makeup.

For a first date

This is one occasion that you can dress down for! Go for a fitted cable knit sweater with folded or pin-rolled boyfriend jeans and ankle boots or high-top sneakers. Layer with a leather jacket, parka or coat and throw on a bobble beanie for a more laid-back look.

Layering with winter essentials

Tweed

Tweed is a staple winter fabric – it’s not thick, warm and durable but it’s looks amazingly stylish. Layering with tweed is pretty easy – it goes well with most colours, especially black and other neutrals, so match your tweed blazer and black skinny jeans, riding boots and a grey sweater. Take a cue from Diane Kruger, the shoulder robing queen ( click through to find out how do pull this off like a pro), and wear a coat over your shoulders. You can also do this with a tweed blazer – just wear a sweater and waistcoat with a button-down shirt underneath.

Printed scarves

A printed scarf (the longer and more frayed the edges, the better) is a great way to finish off a look. Wear with a solid coloured knit jersey, tailored pants and a coat for a high-fashion look. Accessorise with a clutch and T-strap heels or pumps and you’re good to go!

Coloured coats

Coloured coats are one of the hottest trends this season, according to what we’ve seen on Fashion Week runways. They’re the outermost layer of your outfit, so why not make a statement? You can try a candy-coloured or patterned coat with a monochrome outfit for maximum effect, or play around with complementary and clashing colours – brown and burgundy or red and pink, for example. Finish off the look with a wide-brimmed hat or a beanie.
