GLAM Book Chat: Anja van der Spuy

It’s no secret that Anja van der Spuy loves words – after all, she’s a content editor and the blogger behind Glitz and Grammar. But both roles are decidedly digital, and we happen to know that Anja loves the story-on-paper type of writing, too, so we asked her to tell us a bit about her reading habits – so that you can get some ideas about what to put on your books-to-buy list next!

You can click through to Anja’s ‘Today I’m wearing…’ diary here.

GLAMOUR:

Have you ever been given a really wonderful book as a gift?

As much as I love books, I hardly ever get them as gifts. I did once get money from friends and family to buy myself a Kindle, and at the beginning of the year a brand sent me a beautiful book on fashion. But people mostly give me shiny things for my birthday. (Bling and money.)

Where is your favourite place to read?

Oh, definitely Yzerfontein! Last year I re-read all the Harry Potter books in between dips in the ocean. It was incredible – I might do it again this year.

What do you use as a bookmark?

Basically anything within a 1 meter radius of my bed. The rule: If I can reach it from my bed, I can use it as a bookmark. I’m quite fond of using receipts as bookmarks. That’s how I justify all my Food Lover’s Market receipts.

Do you judge books by their covers?

Uh,  ja. People who say that they don’t are liars. If a cover’s design is lazy or boring, I’ll just assume that the book is too.

What are you reading right now?

Infanta by Deon Meyer. I work in an English environment, so I never get the opportunity to speak or read Afrikaans. My Afrikaans skills aren’t what they used to be  – this is my way of getting them back on track again. Before this I read the Bridget Jones – Mad About the Boy , It was such laugh! I’ve always had a very soft spot for her, and it was such a treat to read about her awkward life again. When I’m done with Infanta, I’m moving on to your very own Cayleigh Bright’s book, Close To Home . VERY excited to read it!

 E-book or hard copy?

I have an E-book, and I love it because it’s so compact. I can carry 10 books with me at the same time without breaking my back. But nothing comes close to the smell of a new book. I have bought many great things in my life, yet nothing makes me feel more successful than holding a new book in my hands.
