Espadrilles get a South African upgrade this summer

It has graced the feet of movie stars like Sophia Loren and Lauren Bacall, and present-day fashion icons like Amal Clooney and Blake Lively are big fans – it’s summer’s favourite shoe style, the espadrille.

Known for their laid-back ease, woven jute soles and the shape of the uppers, these classic Mediterranean shoes are being given a South African twist thanks to design duo Rizqah Isaacs and Patricia Terre of Espadril. Not only will you be able to buy a pair in their existing beautiful designs, but you can also customise your own, right down to the style of the uppers and soles to the use of ribbons, threads and leather ankle laces. This new approach is inspired by international designers Stella McCartney, Jimmy Choo, Alexander Wang and Christian Louboutin, whose recent designs are encouraging women to wear espadrilles both on and off the beach.

Prices range from R600 – R800 a pair and can be found at  Superbalist.com or in Espadril’s Cape Town store at 100 Bree Street, CBD. For more info, visit  espadril.co.za.
