Selim Kagee is SA’s pop-opera sensation who has impressed audiences the world over with his contemporary classical music. In 2014, Selim sang the South African anthem in Perth, Australia on live television for the Boks vs Australia rugby match, as well as the Welsh anthem in Durban and Nelspruit. That same year, he performed alongside top opera and classical pop singers from around the world at the prestigious Sergio Franchi Memorial concert in the United States.
GLAMOUR caught up with the handsome muso to find out more about what makes him tick.
What would you say is your best attribute?
I think I have great tenacity in the projects I undertake, with the stamina of a beast to pull through.
What instantly attracts you to a woman?
Her confidence and interest in me – I think it’s human nature that we all want to feel valued and worth spending time with.
Describe your ideal date.
Sitting on a quiet beach during the sunset with some light delicacies and a band playing Spanish music in the distant background.
What fills the spot at the top of your dream destination list?
A train trip through the mountains of the Italian countryside. I’ve done this once before many years ago and it’s been my dream to go back and experience the serenity and old-worldly charm again, and to visit the little cobblestoned towns in the summer.
What’s your favourite drink?
It’s the drink I drink all the time. Every day, actually. Many people don’t understand why I drink so much of it – they think I’m crazy. I take a lot of time to acquire it and I sometimes pay too much for it, but the quality is important to me. This drink, it’s… water.
Do you have any regrets when it comes to past relationships?
No I don’t – every person in your life allows you to grow, to realise yourself. I think we learn about ourselves most through our relationships with other people. This is when your true self comes out. Sometimes I think the person we’re with is really a part of ourselves that we have to learn to come to terms with.
