Style tips for slaying at this year’s Sun Met celebrated with Mumm

One of SA’s most prestigious horseracing events, Cape Town’s annual Sun Met attracts stars, socialites and fashionistas galore, and there’s a big emphasis on the fashion. So what to wear for a day at the races – especially one with ‘Decades of Glamour’ as its inviting theme?

We took a lead from partner GH Mumm Champagne, which has commissioned top SA designers to dress three celebs for the event. Jeannie D will rock a daring Warrick Gautier design, Minnie Dlamini will sizzle in Klûk CGDT and Da LES will be in the red, courtesy of House of Ole. Who better to advise you on how to look #SunMet worthy than these stellar talents?

Warrick Gautier

It’s all about a magnificent day at the races and less about crass theatrical costumes – remember it’s a formal event and not a fancy dress party.

Your outfit should reference the past but still be fashionably relevant. For example, get a classic tailored suit altered to include transparent fabric for a sexy modern touch.

A body-hugging mini is always sensual and fun, while a mid-calf length flare dress is flattering and flirty.

Cut-outs and revealing detailing work well with a floor-length gown.

Don’t overdo it with accessories: keep jewellery minimal and ensure your shoes have a comfortable block heel with thin straps for a refined look.

Hats are in the extreme, oversized or miniature, there’s no in-between.

Men should be elegant in a tailored suit.

Stay cool by wearing natural fibres like cotton and silk.

For a style guide, consider what you would wear to a garden party at Buckingham Palace.

There are so many glamorous and inspiring styles over the last century: drop-waist flapper dresses from the ‘20s, floral tea dresses from the ‘30s and fitted suits from the ‘40s.

Don’t forget your sunglasses and sunscreen as you #DareWinCelebrate.

And for the guys…

It’s OK to draw inspiration from social media but don’t blatantly copy other people’s outfits – add some personality with your favourite accessories, jewellery and colours.

When it comes to accessories, it’s time to put the lapel flower to rest – it’s been overdone.

You can never go wrong with a crisp white shirt and a cool pair of shades.

Bring in some #Mumm personality with a touch of red and a bubbly attitude.
