4 Things you need to know about Helsinki Fashion Week

From food to decor, Nordic style is influencing modern culture in a major way – so if you’re looking for trend inspiration, you’ll find it at Helsinki Fashion Week. Keep an eye out as we cover all the action from 22 to 26 July, and in the meantime, indulge your love for all things fresh, cool and chic with these fashion week factoids:

1 The Designers

Hot doesn’t begin to describe these top designers, all of whom we think are worth a second look.

Arethé Stockholm

A contemporary Swedish fashion label, Arethé Stockholm was launched in 2014 and founded by couple Alina Bendikova and Reza Alipour. The brand’s driving concept is to create a wardrobe able to meet the many needs of the modern day woman who balances career, social life and private life, with a focus on creating versatile pieces that are easy to wear and transform from day into night.

Yana Chervinska

A womenswear brand established in 2012, the label’s avant garde collections are a glimpse into the fairy realms of Yana Chervinska’s rich fantasy world, where all things twisted and beautiful merge.

TING GONG

Born in China, and currently living and working in the Netherlands, Ting Gong devotes herself to making clothing that embodies phenomena, technology, and contemporary art. “Our dreams simply offer experiences at any given time.”

August

August was founded by Estonian designer Äli, who, after gaining experience in the ateliers of Nicolas Andreas Taralis and Maison Martin Margiela, returned home to bring her vision of designing clothes to life. A brand that combines natural materials with innovative design, August creates a seamless harmony between comfort, practicality, and style.

2 The Setting

Taking ‘Back to the Future’ as its theme, this year Helsinki Fashion Week will be contrasting the old and the new in a series of shows set to take place in three of the city’s most iconic museums.

3 The Ethos

With a belief in 100% sustainable fashion, Helsinki Fashion Week is creating a tangible platform for ecologically minded designers. Working as a non-profit organisation, HFW sponsors designers around the world, giving those with ethically made garments the opportunity to showcase their work on a global stage.

4 The SA Connection

Look out for local photographer and videographer Christian McCallum, who will be flying the South African flag high as he goes under the spotlight during the event, shooting an exclusive Helsinki Fashion Week film.
