She’s an incredible dancer
Copeland was 13 when she first discovered dance, and she hasn’t looked back since. The now 34-year-old superstar of ballet executes complex figures one after the other, leaving us all in awe. With jaw-dropping pirouettes and piqués, and dynamic and dramatic relevés, the new-found American sweetheart has quickly become a social media sensation, with an imposing 1.4 million followers on Instagram.
She’s a ballet pioneer
In June 2015, Misty Copeland became the first African American woman to become a principal dancer at the American Ballet Theater, one of the most prestigious companies in the US. On that day, artistic director Kevin McKenzie told Misty to “take a bow”, in recognition of a dream so long fought for finally coming to pass. Hillary Clinton and Prince both tweeted their congratulations, while The Washington Post simply stated “Finally”.
