Lorde wants the haters to come watch her “murder a stage”

The Grammys’ glaring problem with regards to how it treats women was on full display Sunday night, when female artists were largely snubbed despite delivering some of the best music of 2017 — and the best performances of the night. Notably, the audience was deprived of a performance from Lorde, who was the only woman nominated for Album of the Year, as well as reportedly the only one not offered a solo performance. Rather than perform in a group, the pop star stayed silent during the Grammys, skipping the red carpet and letting the Jenny Holzer essay pinned to her back speak for itself.

Come Monday morning, however, Grammys executives dug themselves further into a hole rather than address their gender issue. Recording Academy president Neil Portnow received a ton of backlash for saying that women artists need to “step up,” while Grammys executive producer Ken Ehrlich replied “I don’t know if it was a mistake” when asked about Lorde’s exclusion.

On Monday afternoon, Lorde, it seemed, refused to stay silent any longer. “IF YOU’RE DEBATING WHETHER OR NOT I CAN MURDER A STAGE… COME SEE IT FOR URSELF 😇,” she wrote in a now-pinned tweet, along with a link to her Melodrama tour dates. Although she did not mention the Grammys by name, her message comes through loud and clear: Lorde is not someone to mess with.
