Oprah on her biggest teenage insecurity and the advice she lives by

Oprah Winfrey has been the queen of television for the last 20 years, but she regularly transitions to the big screen, most recently starring in A Wrinkle in Time.

Photography: Bang ShowbizBased on the 60s novel, the fantasy film tells the story of Meg, a teenager who is struggling to fit in at school. Her scientist father went missing five years earlier, and with the help of three celestial guides (Oprah, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling) she travels into space to find him.

“I wore coke-bottle/cat eye glasses and I hated them so much,” Oprah told GLAMOUR, speaking of her own teenage years. “I went to my mother saying, ‘please can I get a pair of octagon glasses?’ but we couldn’t afford it.

“I accidentally staged a robbery and broke them and had myself put in the hospital. Just because of my glasses, because I thought it was the reason I wasn’t being accepted. I ended up having to get some new glasses, so yeah. Now I wear them all the time, but I hated glasses growing up.”

Oprah’s infamously turbulent childhood was the catalyst to her success. After experiencing poverty and sexual assault, she discovered Maya Angelou’s novel I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which she credits to changing her outlook on life. Much later, they became friends.

“The woman who was like a mother to me, Maya Angelou, has a wonderful poem called To Our Grandmothers,” says Oprah. “In the poem, she says, ‘When you learn, teach. When you get, give.’”

Inspiring words to live by.
