Prepare to hear the gospel according to André Leon Talley

André Leon Talley is practically the definition of an icon. Formerly the  Vogue editor-at-large, his career spans decades and includes everything from time spent at Andy Warhol’s Factory in New York City during the ‘70s to his many years at  Vogue as editor-at-large to appearances as a judge  America’s Next Top Model and his very own radio show. He’s worn a lot of hats in his career — as well as his signature long, flowing capes in dramatic prints and colours — and it’s all captured on camera for a new documentary,  The Gospel According to André.

The trailer for the film, which dropped this week, gives viewers a more personal look at the life of André, showing the legendary editor dancing with Diana Ross, spending time at the  Vogue offices, wearing tons of fabulous designer clothing, and making a point to spotlight more African-American designers and models in the fashion world. “You don’t get up and say, ‘Look, I’m black and I’m proud,'” he says. “You just do it, and somehow it impacts the culture.”

André’s also got some famous friends who pop up in the trailer — he’s worked with both super high-profile designers such Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs, who are both featured in the doc along with Whoopi Goldberg and Manolo Blahnik. ALT is even pals with former First Lady Michelle Obama and has had a role playing himself on FOX’s  Empire. There’s basically nothing André can’t do once he sets his mind to it, and watching the trailer truly shows you how one person can make the world more beautiful simply by being themselves. If you’re not familiar with André but have always loved fashion and  Vogue, the doc will be the perfect crash course to truly see the impact this visionary figure has had on the world and the way we dress — and how he helped make the fashion world more inclusive.

Watch the trailer below and get ready to be inspired by André, his vision, and his life. The documentary premieres in theatres on April 27:
