Serena Williams has a lot going on right now—she’s launched her own fashion line, recently debuted a successful documentary series, returned to doing what she does best following the birth of daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian, Jr.
During the journey back to the court, she’s been open about the challenges of motherhood (including missing her daughter’s first steps for training) as well as the sexism that she’s faced as an athlete quite literally at the top of her game. But one thing she’s not going to do? Apologize for being the best.
During a recent press conference at Wimbledon, Williams was asked a question by Telegraph reporter Jamie Johnson. He asked if it was hard being the “one to beat”—after all, everyone who’s coming up against Williams on the court is on the top of their game, too.
First of all, let’s acknowledge that he acknowledged her greatness (rightfully so, we might add).
Second of all, her response was absolute dynamite.
“I’m glad someone admitted that,” Williams responded, rightfully. “But yeah, every single match I play, whether I’m coming back from a baby, or surgery, it doesn’t matter, because these young ladies bring a game that I’ve never seen before… That’s what makes me great.”
Did she apologize for being incredible? Mumble away his acknowledgment of her greatness? Nope, she owned it—as she damn well should.
Best of all, Williams then wrapped up her answer with this kicker: “I always play everyone at their greatest, so I have to be greater.”
