President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered his second SONA focusing on access to higher education, women and child abuse, unemployment, state-owned enterprises and improving the economy.
With the exception of EFF’s Floyd Shivambu getting up to complain that the President was ‘plagiarising’ their ideas—which had everyone at the edge of their seats—the 2019 State of the Nation address proceeded quite smoothly. Which is how it should be. South Africans were not having it though and took to social media to express what an anti-climax this year’s Sona was.
The Red carpet, on the other hand, did not disappoint. Plenty of drama there, a few ensembles that were just a royal mess, and some that were an absolute vision.
Here are our top 4:
It's Oscar baby. Oscar who? Oscar De La Renta. Yass honey! Orange sure is the new black sis. Stunning. Absolutely stunning.
Madam Speaker had us green with awe and applause in her emerald green gown. Simple and classic. Yes to this dress madam!
The UCT Vice-Chancellor went for a simple and elegant Afro-chic ensemble made by Atteridgeville-based designer, Refentse Motsepe of Artistic Gusto. We love that the FabAcademic buys local, buys African and supports young entrepreneurs.
The Communications Minister (right) went for a classic red number. She slayed, finish, and klaar.
