6 songs to commemorate #WomensDay

This Sunday, South Africans across spheres will be paying tribute to all the women in the country.

The National Women's Day is a South African public holiday celebrated annually on 9 August.

The day commemorates the 1956 march of approximately 20 000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to petition against the country's draconian laws that required South Africans defined as "black" carry an internal passport, known as a pass during the apartheid era.

The country commemorates the 64th anniversary of women’s day under its continued lockdown regulation which is meant to flatten the curve against the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year’s women’s day also comes at a time when many people across sectors, especially those dominated by women have retrenched thousands of their workforce, thereby once again highlighting the plight of women in the country.

It also comes at a time when the scourge of Gender-Based Violence which affects women the most continues to raise its ugly head across the country.

A #GLAMOURWomenMonth Series which is an ode to women who are following the beat of their drum and doing it successfully is currently running and many have spoken out against various issues affecting women.

The vivacious women at Condé Nast who bring you your favourite magazine have picked 5 songs we can all enjoy during this year’s women’s day while we are engaging in different conversations that will see the upliftment of women.

“Since the pandemic hit South Africa about 2 million women have lost their jobs, a grim addition to the harsh realities we face on a daily basis in this country. We are grateful for those who fought for the freedoms we enjoy today, but we still have a long journey ahead.

“However, no matter how dark the days get it is so important to remember that you are beautiful, you are capable, you are unique and you are loved. We need to support each other and remind each other of this not only in Women's Month but every chance we get.”
