Off the back of his Glamour Unplugged performance recently, we catch up with Benny Afroe. We chat music, fashion, the secret to his heart and much more.
Thank you for the lovely unplugged session you gave us yesterday. What went into preparing your set?
It’s always a pleasure having the opportunity to showcase my craft. The preparation process includes picking out songs and finally getting to shortlist the songs according to the nature of the performance. We then rehearse the songs until we’re good to go.
We love your single This Feeling with Ami Faku. What was the inspiration behind the song?
It was one of those spontaneous moments. We were chilling at Ami’s place with Lastee, who’s also Nasty C’s producer. He played us a couple of beats and we had a moment with one of the beats he played. We started humming some melodies to it and before we knew it. WE HAD A SONG!
Can we expect new music soon?
Yes! I’m currently working on a project set to release in the coming few months. I’m also working on other singles with various artists set to release soon. I’m excited. I can’t wait!
Your name is synonymous with “Drip”. Where did your love for fashion come from?
I grew up listening to a whole lot of 80s/90s bands. I’ve always been intrigued not only by the music they made but also the fashion! The Manhattans, Jackson 5s, The big dudes and other guys. It was those legends who inspired my look.
What’s your most prized fashion possession?
It has to be one of my Dr Martens boots. I spend so much time customizing them. They definitely do have a special place in my heart.
They say the key to a man’s heart is his stomach. Is this true for you? If not, what’s the secret to yours?
I won’t lie, I love my food, but music is definitely the key to my heart. The only guaranteed working secret to Benny Afroe’s heart.
