If you've watched How Do I Look? SA, you know that at times people struggle to let go of their old looks, and to be fair most of us do. So we've decided to give you the lowdown on how to spring clean your wardrobe.
Let’s be honest, with the sunny season fast approaching we’re dying to buy all the things on our summer wish list. But there is one problem. Our wardrobe and the contents of it. If your closet resembles an episode of Hoarders, or, feels like your going deep sea diving every morning, it might be time to do some spring cleaning. So put your big girl panties on (the ones you’re not throwing out), pour yourself a stiff drink (recommended), and have some black bags on standby.
We’ve rounded up our top 3 tips to make the dreaded spring clean as painless as possible. Enjoy!
Step 1: Edit
The most important, but also the most dreaded, part of undertaking a big spring clean project is getting rid of your beloved clothes. The easiest way to go about this is by physically assessing each and every item of clothing you own, and if you haven’t worn it in the last 2 – 4 months, chuck it! Because, if you haven’t worn it for that long, what makes you think you’ll wear it anytime soon? However, seasonal items like coats and jerseys should go into storage until the appropriate season comes around. It’s also best to try on your clothes. If they don’t fit, they must go.
It’s not all doom and gloom, donate all the unwanted items to your local charity shop. And for the items that have seen the end of their lifespan and are unwearable? Take them to your nearest H&M store where they will be recycled, and in return, you'll receive a gift voucher. Talk about a win-win situation!
Step 2: Organize
After you've completed the editing process, you then need start introducing order into your wardrobe. Start by grouping your clothes by type (eg: group all your dresses together) and then sub-divide by colour. It might seem tedious, but the end result will not only be more organized but also one hundred times more aesthetically pleasing! Go the extra mile and invest in some good quality matching hangers for items that need to be hung. For the smaller things like swimwear and underwear, buy some cute organizers, they will not only help you keep track of things but will also make for a neater looking wardrobe.
Step 3: Restock
Now that you’ve endured the worst part of the process, it’s time for the fun part. Once you've cleared out and organised your closet, you'll have a better idea of what you actually need in your wardrobe. But this is not an excuse to go crazy and re-fill your wardrobe with the things you just got rid of! I mean, do you really want to go through all of this again? No. So replenish your wardrobe with the necessities and you’ll be set!
