GLAMOUR: Why is fitness important to you?
LW: The health benefits of exercising regularly and physical activity are hard to ignore and everyone benefits from exercise, regardless of age or physical ability or what workout routine they are doing. For me it is just about keeping healthy and active. I have met many women who approach me and say they're too old to exercise or they're too scared to go to the gym. I use my radio show to educate listeners on the fun ways of working out and that workouts don't need to be restrictive of age or fitness levels.
I don’t want people to feel overwhelmed by the extent and seriousness of the many fitness and sporting challenges on offer. Instead, I want people to know that you can start really small – plus: I am right out there, with you, supporting you and taking part in the new activities that we come across,
GLAMOUR: Other than traditional training, what fun ways do you like to train, giving you the best possible workout?
LW: My favorite summer activity is Stand Up paddle boarding - a great core as well as a cardio workout. In summer there hasn't been a day when I haven't seen dolphins or whales during my paddles out of cape town. I also enjoy beach Frisbee - this is very social, but you get a good cardio workout at the same time. On my Fitness Show I was introduced to Hula Hooping by a number of listeners who swear by it, saying it has helped with spine flexibility and muscle toning.
GLAMOUR: How often do you work out?
LW: Twice a day/ 5 days a week. It can range from SUP'ing; cycling; swimming; and even heated spinning. My absolute favorite workout is Heated Trampoline class. I also like to incorporate Functional training concentrating on building strength in the right way.
GLAMOUR: You like to incorporate unique training methods into your workout - how has this changed your outlook on fitness and exercise?
LW: Exercise is now fun and exciting and no longer a boring chore. You don't plateau as you are constantly challenging yourself and your fitness levels. I like to find diverse and unique ways of working out.
GLAMOUR: What are your fitness goal for 2020?
Every week on my Fitness Friday Podcast, a listener can challenge me to try a new workout or fitness activity. In 2019 I took up sailing and worked towards my skipper’s license, Sailing is a sport that will work many aspects of physical fitness: Core and muscle strength. In 2020, I want to take up surfing as well as try my hand at kite-boarding but I also want to try more workouts, which focuses on mindfulness and mental health.
GLAMOUR: Why should people try other methods of fitness as opposed to a typical gym setting?
LW: It is about attaining functional fitness and not just being strong in one-dimensional planes. However, many gyms now offer unusual and unique classes as well as workouts, making fitness fun again.
GLAMOUR: As a couple, you and your fiancée are very active - what makes training together fun?
LW: Although we both race/compete in events at different speeds; we try to do 75% of our training together. We use it as quality time together to catch up as opposed to just speeding through our training. Mike and I do allot of fun sporting activities together, most recently completing our PADI Enriched Air Diver qualifications together as well as working together towards our skipper’s license. We now combine our fitness with our vacations and make it a "Fitcation"
GLAMOUR: What is your best fitness tip?
LW: Working out is not only for a gym or one hour a day; you can also add workouts to your work day. Either sit on a stability ball for core strength or take a break every 40minutes from your computer to do some squats or other forms of exercise for a minute or two. Work can get stressful and it's nice to be able to take a break, calm down, and then refocus on the task at hand.
GLAMOUR: What are your favourite workout/fitness accessories?
LW: GoPro - because most of our training is done social with friends, it's a perfect way to document our fun fitness activities. It is also a good way to look back at our form when it comes to running or swimming Apple Watch - Apart from using it for monitoring my workouts, et notifications during the day that encourage you to get up and move around, or ones that help you put in the final push to close your exercise ring
GLAMOUR: What other form of exercise is on your "to-do list"?
LW: Any exercise that forms part of active recovery should be on every person’s workout list. Yoga and especially aerial yoga - staying suspended in the air releases tension in the bones and muscles and increases flexibility. It also strengthens core muscles and increases spinal and shoulder flexibility.
GLAMOUR: How do you balance diet VS training?
LW: A healthy eating plan and fitness goes hand in hand. It doesn’t matter if you are already training hard – if you don’t pay attention to what you put in your body, you won’t achieve your desired results. I listen to my body, if I am hungry than I will fuel myself with real food.
