Selena Gomez has opened up about her split from The Weeknd, and it’s not what we were expecting. Despite getting back with Justin Bieber, Selena says she’s still best friends with her most recent ex.
“Something that I’m really proud of is that there’s such a true friendship [between me and The Weeknd],” she told Billboard. “I truly have never experienced anything like that in my life. We ended it as best friends, and it was genuinely about encouraging and caring [for each other], and that was pretty remarkable for me.”
Speaking of Justin, she said: “I’m 25. I’m not 18, or 19, or 20. I cherish people who have really impacted my life. So maybe before, it could have been forcing something that wasn’t right. But that doesn’t mean caring for someone ever goes away. And [that goes for] people in general.”
Last month it was announced that Selena and The Weeknd had broken up after 10 months of dating.
The news of the split came just days after Selena was spotted hanging out with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber, causing fans to believe that he had something to do with it. However, a source confirmed that Selena and The Weeknd (real name, Abel) had in fact called it quits due to their busy work schedules long before she was seen with Bieber.
“It was more of a mutual break up. They were distant because of work,” the source told E! News. “It didn’t end in a bad way. The relationship was basically over before Justin Bieber and Selena hung out.”
