Some people think Taylor Swift’s new music video copied a famous perfume ad

Taylor Swift released her “Delicate” music video less than 24 hours ago, but already it’s generating quite the controversy. According to some eagle-eyed Twitter users, the visuals for “Delicate” seem to bear more than a passing resemblance to one famous video from 2016: Spike Jonze’s four-minute short film/perfume ad for Kenzo, starring Margaret Qualley.

Both videos revolve around a woman (Taylor in “Delicate” and Margaret in the ad) in fancy dresses at black-tie events; after they each become disillusioned with their stuffy surroundings, they start dancing wildly and making faces all around the venue. There are a few differences, of course: Margaret mostly performs to an audience of none, while Taylor dances through an unseeing crowd. Plus, Margaret ends the video by jumping through a massive logo for the perfume. Meanwhile, Taylor dances in the rain before meeting a mysterious person (cough, Joe Alwyn, cough). Also, Margaret is a classically-trained ballet dancer, and Taylor isn’t. Even so, though, people think there are enough parallels to call Taylor’s out.

Twitter users compiled clips and stills from both videos and compared them side by side to show the similar facial expressions, dance moves, and even entire shots.

So it’s just the Kenzo perfume ad, but with Taylor Swift? #Delicate pic.twitter.com/oY8hTCdPnz

The new @taylorswift13 Delicate music video is such an insanely blatant copy/rip-off of the Spike Jonze Kenzo World commercial. The setting, colour palette, choreography, everything.

do you think taylor swift saw the KENZO World ad and just told her producer “I want a less cool version of that?”

Billboard noted some additional elements from her “Delicate” clip that are similar to other famous music videos. Exhibit A: The central “disturbed by fame” plot, which seems to be a hat-tip to Britney Spears’ video for “Lucky.” Also, the wild dancing channels Maddie Ziegler in Sia’s “Chandelier.” (Incidentally, Maddie’s choreographer for the video happened to also choreograph the Kenzo ad.)

Neither her nor Spike has commented on their videos’ alleged similarities, but you can watch both for yourself and decide, below.
