Thuso Mbedu wins TV Breakout Star Award from Hollywood Critics Association

South African actress Thuso Mbedu, who stars as Cora in the Amazon series The Underground Railroad, won the award for TV Breakout Star at the inaugural Hollywood Critics Association awards ceremony last night.

The historical fictional series, set in the 18th Century, is a period drama which portrays the story of a woman chasing her freedom from slavery by way of a train route during that time.

After the virtual event last night, Thuso took to social media to share the news:

This is Thuso’s first award of the year, and her debut into Hollywood. She has been catapulted into global stardom after making history as the first South African to be cast as a lead role in an international series. She is currently working on a project with Viola Davis, titled The Woman King, that will be filmed in South Africa.

On receiving the award, Thuso said she is thankful for the recognition of her acting skills.

“The Underground Railroad has been an amazing journey from start to finish. I could not have asked for a better introduction to storytelling on this side of the world. I am truly honoured. Truly. Thank you to every single person who has walked this journey with me. You’re loved by me. Forever,” she wrote.

Fans were just as ecstatic as the young star, and took to Twitter to show their support:
