Exploring Joburg in a Rolls-Royce is the stuff dreams are made of

It's not often that you wake up and head to a Rolls-Royce dealership. But when a brand of this calibre calls, you answer.

Stepping into the Rolls-Royce showroom in Melrose Arch, you're immediately enveloped by an unmistakable aura of quiet luxury and sophistication. Every detail is intentional, inviting you to slow down and take it all in. The vehicles instantly command your attention, and before long, you're instinctively leaning in for a closer look.

With only a handful of cars on display, each one effortlessly owns its space. Their presence is impossible to ignore. You find yourself meandering through the showroom, drawn from one masterpiece to the next as if by magnetism. That's the power of Rolls-Royce.

CEO of Daytona Group, Justin Divaris affirms that Africa's appetite for ultra-luxury vehicles continues to grow. "We are a small- to medium-tier showroom in Africa and currently the only one on the continent. The demand in Africa has been increasing, so we're building another showroom in Cairo." Letting us into the House of Luxury, he introduces us to the Ghost: the most advanced, driver-focused Rolls-Royce ever created. Enlightening that it's a stepping stone into the brand and starts at around R16 million.

"Then we move into the Cullinan, followed by our flagship vehicle, the Phantom. We're doing very well with the Phantom in Africa; we sell, on average, two a year, even though our target is one. Last year we surpassed that with four Phantoms sold, and we're on track to do the same again this year. It doesn't really have a base price because every vehicle is bespoke, but if you were to configure one, you're looking at prices from around R23 million upwards."

The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is a bold evolution of the super luxury SUV

Bespoke is a programme run by Rolls-Royce. Because every vehicle is handcrafted, "Clients can work with one of our designers in our private office at Goodwood to specify their car from the ground up, creating something that's completely unique and deeply personal," he says.

Just as you think you've taken it all in, a commanding SUV glides into view. This is no ordinary SUV. The Black Badge Cullinan is built differently, making an unforgettable entrance and stealing the show almost instantly. I'm sold. And then comes the best part: we're heading out for a drive to experience the inspiration behind its design firsthand.

Inspired by nature, the Cullinan offers an immersive driving experience where every detail has been carefully considered. The interior is where peak luxury meets effortless comfort. Every surface, every stitch and every finish reflects Rolls-Royce's uncompromising commitment to craftsmanship. Wrapped in the finest hand-stitched leather and open-pore wood veneers, the cabin feels more like a private sanctuary than the interior of an SUV. Above you, the iconic Starlight Headliner transforms the roof into a constellation of hundreds of fibre-optic lights, while the famed Spirit of Ecstasy quietly leads the way from the bonnet.

As it glides through the streets of Johannesburg, the Cullinan turns heads at every corner. Other motorists instinctively slow down or move aside for a better look, adding to the theatre of the journey. It's just you, the Cullinan and the City of Gold. Time seems to stand still. For a moment, nothing else matters.

Among the Cullinan's standout features are Rolls-Royce's signature "magic carpet" suspension, delivering an exceptionally smooth, whisper-quiet ride; reclining rear lounge seats with massage functionality; plush lambswool floor mats; an immersive Bespoke Audio system; and the marque's iconic rear coach doors, which open with effortless elegance. Every element has been meticulously crafted to ensure the journey is every bit as extraordinary as the destination.

Luxury in Motion Inspired by South Africa's Landscape

We lose track of time as we experience peak luxury in the City of Gold. With every kilometre, the drive becomes less about the destination and more about savouring the journey. As we search for the nearest off-ramp, someone jokes that perhaps we should just keep driving all the way to Durban, and for a brief moment, it doesn't seem like such a far-fetched idea.

Eventually, reality calls, and we're back at the showroom, reluctantly handing over the keys to what has felt like our dream companion for the afternoon. As we step away from the Cullinan, there's a shared moment of wishful thinking. We quietly put it out into the universe that the next time we return, it won't be for a test drive, it'll be to collect our own Rolls-Royce when the stars finally align.
