Take a trip to Tokyo at this Tamboerskloof eatery

It’s Friday and we’re ready for date night! If you happen to be in Cape Town over the weekend and want to sample a Michelin-worthy offering of the finest Japanese eats, visit Kyoto Garden Sushi.

The Backstory

The son of a New York food restaurateur, owner of Kyoto Garden Sushi, Scott Wood decided to open the eatery after a trip to Cape Town in the early 2000s. With a variety of sushi joints popping up in the Mother City, Wood is one of the few (if any) who regularly visits Japan, and employs trained Japanese chefs.

The Food

Wood’s commitment to providing frequenters with an authentic sushi experience is evident in dishes like sea urchin (it’s delicious btw), line fish sashimi, and oyster tempura.

Don’t leave without sampling the miso ice cream for dessert, or the Dirty Sakatini for drinks.

The Vibe

Expect to be transported into a Tokyo villa as you sit adjacent to a diverse group of local and international sushi devotees in the know.

The Dress code

Throw on a chic kimono-inspired frock, paired with tights and ankle boots.

The Verdict

If you’ve had the opportunity to visit authentic Japanese sushi capitals like Los Angeles and Tokyo, then you’re going to love Kyoto Garden Sushi. Tip: ask about their Winter specials.

Kyoto Garden Sushi is located at 11 Lower Kloofnek Road, Cape Town and is open Monday to Saturday 5.30pm-11pm. For bookings call (021) 422 2001.
