6 ways to use your 67 minutes on Mandela Day

Instagram

It is that time of the year again when we celebrate Nelson Mandela’s birthday, July 18th, by spending 67 minutes of our time doing something good for someone in need or even take time out for self-care.

Here are six activity suggestions in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg for you to consider using your 67 minutes for.

Donate a book to a child

Book Dash is an organisation of professional creatives such as writers, illustrators, designers, editors who voluntarily create high-quality children’s books that are available for download, printing and distribution. They are taking donations R10 which they will use to help them get books to kids on Mandela Day. So, you can practically donate to the cause from your home and it definitely will not take 67 minutes. For more information, visit bookdash.org.

Beach clean up

Durbanites are encouraged to come out and clean the KZN coastline for 67 minutes this year. There are a variety of groups you can go with or you can simply get your friends and family to join you. Your recyclable materials can be taken to either the Kloof community recycling drop-off centre or the KZN South Coast community recycling centre.

Make and donate a sleeping bag

Kingsmead College in Johannesburg will be hosting a 67-minute make and donate a sleeping bag, made of newspaper and recycled plastic, event on Mandela Day. The sleeping bags and a handmade scarf will then be distributed to the homeless. A good way to give back to your community.

A Soweto Walk

This year your 67 minutes could also include some self-care. Mandela Mile will be hosting a walk on the Mandelamile in celebration of his life and his to keep his legacy. Visit their Facebook page for more information and try it out.

Have a laugh

The Cape Town Comedy Club will be hosting a comedy show with a cause. 67 Minutes of Laughter will bring you comedy from the likes of Stuart Taylor, Shimmy Isaacs and Sifiso Nene and proceeds from the show will go to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital (NMCH).

Bake for a good cause

Friends of Valkenberg Trust will be baking muffins for patients in Valkenberg Hospital on the morning of July 18th and has invited the public to join in. If you are keen on supporting those struggling with mental illnesses Call 021-447 2092 to sign up.
