SA literature gets an information upgrade!

The Open Book Festival and the University of Cape Town are teaming up to host what they’re calling a ‘Wikipedia Edit-a-thon’, an event that is sure to bring the city’s most dedicated booklovers out in force. It will take place during Cape Town’s Open Book Festival on 21 September, is an effort to create and update Wikipedia pages about South African literature, since there is currently little about this important topic on the site. Selected contributors will create as many pages as possible about local authors and make sure existing pages aren’t outdated.

Hosted at the Fugard Theatre, one of the Open Book Festival’s main venues, the event will see contributors will all simultaneously uploading their content live, and a discussion on the content streamed on a screen inside the theatre at the same time.

There’ll also be two build-up events, on 29 August and 5 September, at which the editing will officially begin – and the public are invited to bring along their best pom-poms and cheer on the editing live. If you love local lit as much as we do, you’ll agree that this is a great project to go out and support.
