While Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day might all be quickly joining Valentine’s Day as the most popular times to pop the question, it seems eight thousand weeks in lockdown has persuaded several couples to also cement their commitment. Well, there is little better relationship test than full-blown isolation...

Whether you get engaged in private or on a Zoom call in front of all your family and friends, aside from the gushy speech and bent knee the most important part of a proposal is the engagement ring. Given you’ll be wedded to it for as long as your future hubs, it’s important that it’s something you’ll love and enjoy wearing every day.

So what style should you choose?

Here’s a round-up of every engagement ring style brides-to-be will be coveting in 2020...

Oval Rings

If you're one for following trends, you might want to opt for what's looking like *the* style of the year. Thanks to supermodel Jourdan Dunn, this stone style has been thrust into the limelight.

She got engaged earlier this year, and was proposed to with a WHOPPING oval-cut ring with a pink undertoned-diamond at the centre of a diamond pave band. We’ve been obsessed ever since she shared the first pic on her Instagram.

Three-Stone Rings

Thanks, no doubt, in large part to Meghan Markle's epic three-stone sparkler, there's been a huge surge in popularity of the 'trilogy' style. Whether you opt for three equal size stones or one larger centre stone with two smaller side stones, it's a super chic choice for those who want serious impact without anything too garish.

Halo Rings

This is nothing new. The style, which sees a central gemstone surrounded by a halo of smaller diamonds that encircle it, gives a glamorous feel that’s timeless and vintage. Perhaps the most famous example is Princess Diana’s sapphire ring which now belongs to Kate Middleton. For 2020 though, expect it to be diamonds paired with more diamonds.

Solitaire Rings

A solitaire ring features a single diamond (though you can glam it up with extra diamonds along the band). It’s a simple, clean style favoured by everyone from Keira Knightley to Michelle Obama.

Two-in-One

Why stick to one style when you can combine two or more? “A trend we expect to see growing in the new year is a two-in-one style engagement ring, combining a classic style with a different diamond cut, such as pear or emerald,” explains Lorna Haddon, head of diamonds and jewellery at Beaverbrooks. Examples of this can be seen from Ariana Grande (whose engagement ring from Pete Davidson was a pear shaped halo) and Jessica Biel (who wears a square cut diamond with a double halo detail around the edge).

Twist detailing

We all love a twist on a classic and this next style puts the twist detail into practice, quite literally. “Another trend we’re expecting to get bigger and better in the new year is people maximising the band itself, with dazzling details twisting a full 360 degrees around the ring,” explains Lorna. “Twisted bands come in all shapes and sizes, and can even be enhanced by a row of smaller diamonds entwined within the band,” she adds. For example Jenna Dewan’s engagement ring from Channing Tatum featured an intricate, diamond-lined twist along the band, but the options are endless if you wish to put your own stamp on it to make it unique to you.
