Rihanna causes Snapchat $1 billion loss

Earlier this week, after a myriad of complaints, Snapchat apologized for an insensitive ad that was featured on their platform. The ad was designed for the mobile game “ Would You Rather?.” The advertisement gave users the option to a) “Slap Rihanna,” or b)”Punch Chris Brown,” referring to the domestic dispute which saw Chris Brown pleading guilty for beating Rihanna in 2009.

Is it just me, or is this ad that popped up on my Snapchat extremely tone deaf? Like what were they thinking with this? pic.twitter.com/7kP9RHcgNG

When Rihanna caught wind of the offensive advertisement, published by the social media application, she had more than a few words to say.

In an Instagram Stories post, the singer and beauty mogul said:

“Now SNAPCHAT I know you already know you ain’t my fav app out there! But I’m just trying to figure out what the point was with this mess! I’d love to call it ignorance, but I know you ain’t that dumb! You spent money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to DV victims and made a joke of it!!! This isn’t about my personal feelings, cause I don’t have much of them…but all the women, children and men that have been victims of DV in the past and especially the ones who haven’t made it out yet…you let us down!” She added, “Shame on you. Throw the whole app-oligy away.”

Rih’s Navy took her advice and deleted the app, showing their solidarity in a series of tweets.

Rihanna’s words sent Snapchat’s stock into a rapid descent, deducting an estimated $1 billion from the company’s market value.
