The Met Gala is a reliably OTT fashion spectacle. And this year’s function, which celebrates the “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and The Catholic Imagination” exhibit with a “Sunday best” dress code, is no exception. But what else did we expect from a party co-chaired by Rihanna, Donatella Versace, and Amal Clooney?

On the 2018 red carpet, guests interpreted the theme of the 2018 Costume Institute exhibit, which explores the relationship between the Catholic church, religion, and fashion, in a variety of different ways, ranging from the conservative to the controversial. Altogether, it made for an evening of memorable fashion, even if some of our burning questions were left unanswered.
