From the sweeping plains of Africa to the dangerous underworld of an American metropolis, the story of Calling Us Home will take you on a journey of courage and spirit.

It is a story about fleeing a brutal war, experiencing the hardships of displacement and fighting for survival in order to ultimately find the true meaning of home. The characters in the story experience heartache suffer ruthless injustice but ultimately triumph through hope and courage and the indestructible power of the human spirit.

As the story unfolds we follow the experiences of Grace, a young African refugee as she finds great love in the strange new world of America. Rafael, the Spanish foreman of a migrant construction team, confronts danger in the criminal underworld while he seeks and finds his integrity and Nelson, an African bush soldier, who as the narrator, shares with us the power of the call of ‘home’. The immense courage and ability to face up to life is celebrated in the women in this story. We applaud Grace as she retains hope and love in the face of adversity, we root for Lindiwe – a child bride, who fights her way to freedom while retaining her irrepressible humour and we celebrate the beautiful Isabella – an orphan, as she finds the power of her extraordinary voice to move her community and find justice.
