Meet Afro House DJ and entrepreneur on the rise, African November

Durban-based female DJ, African November’s fashion style is as electrifying as her music. Having worked South Africa’s biggest brands she’s on her way to becoming one of SA’s top Dj’s.

GLAMOUR: Describe your sound…

African November: My music matches who I am and where I’m from. The way I dress and represent myself as a modern African woman is what you hear in my music, it’s current with a touch of my heritage.

G: How does fashion play a role in your music and everyday life?

AN: I use fashion to express what I cannot say. I have loved fashion and style, from a young age…I’d buy magazines and watch Fashion TV the whole day. Just like music, it’s a deep passion of mine, so mixing the two together through my work is like a dream come true.

G: Where did your love of music come from?

AN: My love for music came as a child while listening to my parent’s vinyls. I also used to set up my own collection of cassettes and CD’s… growing up. Then, years later, while living in New York when interning for one of their biggest PR companies, I also worked with underground musicians in my spare time.

G: Why did you decide to become a House DJ, in a largely male-dominated industry?

AN: I love a good challenge. And being in any business industry is tough, but I am a risk taker and I am very fearless when it comes to the pursuit of my goals. Being a female [in the industry] has it’s up’s and downs, as in any industry, but I remain focused on the task at hand with everything I invest in.

G: What advice do you have for upcoming female DJs?

AN: I just want women to be fearless. We are just as powerful and as empowered as any man.
