Pretty prices

Let’s be honest, we’ve all at least attempted to create some makeup looks during COVID-19.

For those of us that need some extra tips, you’re in luck – Digital Beauty Creator @thando_khumalo6 shares some of her favorite tricks on achieving a dewy and natural look like a pro with the pretty affordable Rimmel of London products!

GLAMOUR: How do you customize your look if you can’t find the right make-up?

Thando: Let me tell you something, when it doubt, brown it out. Neutral tones are always a safe bet when you’re struggling to get the right look. You can never go wrong because 1) browns and neutral look amazing on every complexion; and 2) you have options for any occasion – natural and bronzed, soft glam, a smokey eye, you name it. Brown is the way to go!

G: Your ultimate favourite make-up tip, trick or hack for beginners?

T: If you want to do winged-liner but you don’t have a steady hand, sellotape is your

best friend! Lay the tape on the corner of your outer lid and then wing it. You’ll be left with a clean and razor-sharp wing. I love this trick because you can literally just peel your mistakes away.

G: A quick guide on how to apply makeup like a pro?

T: Like a mechanic needs the right tools to fix a car, you need the right brushes and sponges to do your makeup. Start with a good set of ‘tools’ and you’re already one step closer to applying makeup like a pro. Prep tools include the Rimmel of London Lasting Matte primer and the Insta Fix & Go Setting Stray.

G: How do you choose a foundation formula that is best suited for your skin type?

T: Get familiar with your skin and its needs. I have what we call a “Normal” skin type. However, it’s incredibly sensitive and sunburns within minutes. So, when I go

Foundation shopping, I look for something hydrating with skincare benefits and SPF.

The Rimmel Lasting Finish 25hr Foundation is a great example of a foundation I’d typically gravitate towards.

G: How do you ensure that your makeup looks flawless?

T: Blend, blend and blend! It takes some time but it’s so necessary. I like to say that your face should look like an ombre. Blend that foundation down to your neck. Blend that harsh line between sure your highlight and contour. Just blend!

G: How do you avoid your face from caking due to your foundation?

T: I am a ‘less is more’ person. I use as little product as I possibly can. People ultimately layer on foundation because they want to cover up their imperfections. As yummy as cake is, you don’t want to look like one. To avoid using heaps of foundation, after priming your face, either colour correct or spot conceal then apply your foundation. Because you’ve already taken care of those spots, you won’t have to use loads of foundation.

G: What is your favorite feeling when it comes to applying makeup?

T: I absolutely love it when I’ve just finished setting my face with powder then taking a wet cotton pad and wiping away the excess product on my lips. There’s just something so satisfying about it.

G: Your favourite Rimmel London product that can be multi-used and how would you wear it?

T: The golden shimmer shades in the Magnif’eyes Nude Edition palette double-up beautifully as highlighter for the cheek bones and the bridge of the nose. The formula of the shadows allows you to gradually go from a subtle glow to a blinding beam of light. If you like to use powder products to fill in your brows, the brown shades in this palette work like a dream!

G. If you only had the Rimmel London magnif’eyes Nude edition palette and the provocalips in your makeup bag how would you use those two products to create a full glam look?

T: Full glam, two products? I’m crying! Clearly, this is going to be a ‘no makeup makeup’ kind of day. Alright, so, I’d dip into the darkest shade in the Magnif’eyes Nude Edition palette to create hair-like strokes for the brows. Because this is a minimal look, we want

everything to appear as natural as possible. For highlight, I’d lightly dab the shimmers in the palette on the high points of my face. To give the look a bit of colour, I would mix the Provocalips liquid lipstick (shade 210 Flirty Fling) with the gloss to create a ‘liquid blush’. Then last but never least, gloss my lips to death - and that is my two-product full glam.

G: 3 products you absolutely love and can’t live without (Rimmel products, please also mention why price points are so important with regards to the products that you choose)?

T 1) The Rimmel Lasting Finish 25Hr Foundation (R189,95) is a holy grail. This foundation is absolutely stunning. Buildable formula, so light on the skin and it has SPF20. I mean, need I say more?

2) I’m about to plug you guys with an AMAZING brow product – the Wonder’last Brow Tint For Days (R189.00). This product has quite literally changed the makeup game for me. It has a thin applicator which helps me create my fluffy brow with little to no effort. The formula is super pigmented but easy to blend. It also sets itself. Rimmel really snapped with this one!

3) The Glam’eyes Day 2 Night Mascara (R169,95) is hands down my favourite mascara at the moment! It gives you so much length and volume without all the clumps and lumps, and crust. The best part about all these products is the price points. You get good quality products that won’t break your bank. Students, I’m talking to you. If you want to get into makeup or maintain your kit, Rimmel is the way to go.

G. 1 product, 3 ways. Which product would you choose and where would you apply it?

T: The Rimmel Professional eyebrow Pencil in shade Dark Brown (R99.95)

- Fill in brows

- Winged liner

- Line my lips

G. Let’s talk purchasing makeup. What’s the one makeup item you’ll splurge on and the one makeup item you’ll save on and why?

T: Mask or not, I will wear layers and layers of lipgloss. So, it goes without say that I would probably spend my entire pay cheque on the Rimmel OH MY GLOSS! in shade ‘Crystal Clear’ (R99.95). Is your look really complete if you’re not wearing clear gloss? I don’t think so. I would save on the Rimmel Magnif’eyes palettes. Eyeshadow palettes are just one of those things that you don’t need to make repeated purchases on. One or two great palettes can go a long way.
