5 Things you need to know before colouring your natural hair

Scrolling through Instagram, you may have noticed something all your favourite influencers have in common: brightly coloured locks. So, if you think it’s time for a change and are feeling daring, you may want to give this trend a go. But, the stylists from hair care brand Frika, have a few tips to share with you before you take the plunge and dye your hair. Take notes…

1. Consider the consequences.

Women with any hair type can dye their tresses in vibrant colours, but your hair could become damaged or dried out if you apply the hair dye directly onto your natural hair. Given that, if you’re keen to flaunt brightly-coloured hair, consider opting for an ombre weave or wig. Alternatively, highlights in luminous shades can be added to braids.

2. Do a trial run.

Not sure if you can pull off that shocking pink look you’ve seen everywhere? Well, try out a temporary alternative by wearing a wig in that shade for a day or two. This will help you to figure out whether the shade complements your complexion. However, given that you will have to put your hair through the stress of bleaching before applying the hair dye, it’s probably best to opt for a wig instead of colouring your locks.

3. Get the inside scoop on the trendiest colours.

You know you want to make a statement with your brand new hair. And, you’ll be sure to do that if you opt for one of the latest colours trending in the world of hairstyling. These include soft shades like light browns and blush pinks, but if you’re after something bolder that’ll make you stand out from the crowd, try a violet or blue shade.

4. Ensure that your hair care routine’s all sorted.

Once it’s been dyed, your hair will be rather fragile, and you’ll need to treat it to some TLC. So, be sure to chat with a hair professional to find out which shampoo and conditioner is best suited to your hair, and how often you should be using it. Remember, each woman is unique, so what works for your friends may not work for you.

5. Maintain your hair condition and colour.

When you colour your hair, there’s a possibility that the dye may dry your hair out. With that being said, lathering your tresses with moisture seal-in products is key. Also, once you’re sporting your refreshed look, you don’t want your colour to fade. So, add a shampoo that won’t strip your hair of its colour, to your beauty regime.
