Hands up who hates dandruff?

The most disheartening beauty issues are often the ones that are difficult to hide (think cold sores and pimples!). Dandruff, especially for those with dark hair or a cupboard full of LBDs, can be such a problem. “The annoying flakes can happen anytime – but seasonal changes can exacerbate an irritated scalp,” says dermatologist Dr Sara Watters! Here’s how to save your scalp from looking like a snow globe.

1 Alternate shampoos

“Because it’s a sort of eczema, the best idea is to switch up your shampoos: opt for one that shows the growth of, or kills, the yeast and one that exfoliates with salicylic acid,” says Dr Watters.

2 Let it sit

Leave the shampoo pm your head for at least a minute so it has time to work. Ideally you should leave it for five minutes so it really has a chance to penetrate your scalp.

3 Moisturise!

If you have dry hair, apply medicated shampoo only to your scalp, rinse, then use a moisturising one on the strands.

4 See a specialist

If dandruff is still a problem a month later, see a dermatologist who can give you a prescription for a stronger shampoo, which should show results in about two weeks.

5 Hide it

In the meanwhile, mask the problem with the right style. Avoid sever side partings or slicked-back styles and pack away your hair straighteners as they only highlight flakiness. Instead, add volume to the crown with mousse and Velcro rollers, or spritz a texturising of salt spray on damp hair and tousle it as you air-dry.

FYI – Cold weather can cause just as much damage to your hair as hot weather, so try these tricks to keep your locks in top shape.
