It’s that time of year again and we’re getting ready for glamour and splendour that is the Sun Met celebrated with G.H Mumm. This event always guarantees the finest in Africa’s rich horse-racing heritage, fashion, and entertainment, and it kicks off the 2018 social calendar on a high (and of course, stylish) note. This year’s theme invites you to wear your best threads and get ready to celebrate in true style. So, what to wear for a day at the races – especially one with ‘Style Ahead of the Field’ as its inviting theme? We bring 2018 Sun Met celebrated with G.H. Mumm influencer, Melody Molale, to your fashion-rescue. She is gorgeous, fashion-forward, smart and uber-stylish. This 20-something year old Corporate Communications graduate is a celebrated blogger, model, fashion stylist and media personality. Who better to advise you on how to look #SunMet worthy than this stellar talent?

We asked Melody to share her favourite exclusive insider style tips on how to remain fashion-forward, no matter what your field.

In your everyday style, how do you try to stay ahead of the field?

By remaining authentic to my style, though I draw some inspiration from my fashion favs, I still maintain my uniqueness and originality.

Our readers find themselves in many different fields from student to corporate. Tell us your top style tips for each of these fields.

The student on a budget

Shop in mom and sister’s closet. Look for items they no longer want, you might find some gems, you never know. You don’t have to pay anything, that way you save money.

Shop at the sale section of the store. My favourite!

Keep an eye out for shops that offer student discount.

The not-so-into-fashion girl

Style doesn’t have to be uncomfortable. The misconception is that in order to look good, you need to be uncomfortable. That is mostly what scares people away from fashion. My advice would be: Keep you style simple and chic, you can’t go wrong.

Don’t be overly matchy matchy. Play with different colours, tones and textures. The colour of your top doesn’t have to match your skirt, shoes, bag and accessories.

The creative

Most creatives are often “jeans-tee-sneakers” kind of girls and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Just amp it up a notch, add cool accessories and bold colours. Throw on statement jewellery, fab stiletto, a trendy bag every now and then.

Don’t be afraid to look and feel dressed up. That’s cool too!

The corporate

Invest in practical, functional and classic pieces.

Fit is very important when it comes to corporate wear. Don’t do overly skimpy items, it comes off as tacky in an office environment. Also, becareful of baggy clothes, they can make you seem untidy and unprofessional in that setting. Find the perfect fit, if not, take it to the tailor.

What makes the fashion at the Sun Met so unique?

The sun Met has always attracted a sophisticated, yet diverse crowd and by extention making it one of the true lifestyle horse racing events in South Africa. I think the combination of Cape Town as a backdrop, horse racing, the entertainment and glamour inspires people to think outside the box while remaining authentic and true to their style.

What trends are you most excited about for 2018?

I think 2018 will be a very interesting year for fashion. As we have seen in 2017 people are more expressive of their style and fashion. Trends are mostly looking forward to are: Bold colours, the sheer trend and ruffles. I always loved ruffles and don’t think they will ever lose their place in fashion.

Finally, what fashion advice do you have for someone wanting to Style Ahead of the Field at the Sun Met Celebrated with G.H Mumm?

Style Ahead of the Field is awesome because it’s open to one’s own interpretation. You can really take it there with this theme, don’t hold back, don’t exercise any modesty this year, give the people what they want…hahaha! Think afrofuturism fashion – bold colours, abstract prints, elaborated head pieces, exaggerated silhouettes, statement jewellery and African textiles. You can draw some inspiration from the likes of Solange and Janelle Monae, and for local flavor check out Nomzamo Mbatha and Nandi Mngoma.

Tickets to the Sun Met will be on sale through TicketPro, this will include Hospitality and General Access tickets for the public. All general access tickets will automatically grant entry to the Official Sun Met After Party.
