Founder and eyewear stylist Adele Camarena turns vision into style

For Adele Camarena, founder and eyewear stylist at Spectacle World Optometrists, it all began with a Grade 8 accounting test and a blurry overhead projector. “The moment I put on my first pair of spectacles, I could see every detail, even the tiniest leaves on a tree. That clarity inspired me to pursue optometry,” she recalls.

Over three decades later, Camarena has transformed that childhood revelation into a thriving practice in Cape Town, blending cutting-edge eye care with the artistry of eyewear styling. From helping children sharpen their vision to guiding clients toward frames that enhance their features and confidence, she continues to redefine what it means to see and be seen.

Glamour:  Let’s go back to that pivotal moment in Grade 8—how did that first experience with spectacles shape not only your vision but your outlook on life?

Adele Camarena: In Grade 8, I struggled with an accounting test because I couldn't clearly see the questions on the overhead projector. A visit to the optometrist and my first pair of glasses transformed my world. Suddenly, everything came into focus—literally and figuratively. That moment not only improved my vision but also inspired my passion for optometry.

Glamour: You’ve been in the industry for over 30 years. What would you say has been the most significant evolution in optometry during that time?

Adele Camarena: Over the past 30 years, the field of optometry has undergone remarkable transformations. From the integration of eye exercises into treatment plans to the advent of digital retinal photography, we've witnessed a revolution in how we assess and enhance vision. Advancements in lens technology have expanded options for both spectacles and contact lenses, offering patients improved comfort and clarity. These innovations have fundamentally changed our perception of the world around us.

What excites me equally is the evolution of eyewear from a purely functional necessity to an exciting expression of personal style. Today, glasses are not just tools for vision correction; they are fashion statements that reflect individuality and confidence. It's inspiring to see patients embrace eyewear as an extension of their personality, choosing frames that make them feel empowered and seen.

Being part of this dynamic journey in optometry has been incredibly fulfilling. I look forward to continuing to blend clinical excellence with aesthetic innovation, helping patients see better and feel their best.

Glamour: What inspired you and your team of female optometrists to branch out and start your own private practice?

Adele Camarena: In 1993, I joined the Spectacle Warehouse Group, marking the beginning of a fulfilling journey in optometry. Driven by a passion for delivering exceptional clinical care, personalised customer service, and expert eyewear styling, I later co-founded Camarena Porter Optometrist, trading as Spectacle World. This venture allowed us to establish a comprehensive eye health care facility, dedicated to serving our community's vision needs with excellence.

Beyond professional aspirations, founding our own practice provided the invaluable benefit of independence. It afforded us the flexibility to manage our time effectively, balancing the demands of a growing practice with family commitments and personal well-being.

Glamour: Spectacle World has successfully catered to both affluent and economically disadvantaged patients—how do you maintain that balance of accessibility and quality care?

Adele Camarena: I'm deeply committed to ensuring that every client experiences the best possible vision, as it profoundly influences all aspects of life—from daily tasks to overall well-being. At our practice, we prioritise accessibility and personalised care, offering a diverse selection of frames and lenses to meet various needs and preferences.

We understand that quality eyewear doesn't have to come with a hefty price tag. There are beautifully designed, affordable frames that provide both functionality and style. Our curated collection includes options that cater to different personalities, facial features, and budgets, ensuring that everyone can find eyewear that suits them perfectly.

As certified eyewear stylists, we take pride in guiding our clients through the selection process, helping them choose frames that not only enhance their vision but also express their individuality. It's about more than just seeing clearly; it's about feeling confident and authentic in your eyewear choices.

Glamour: You’ve taken specialised training in both eye exercises and retinal imaging. How do these additional tools help you stay ahead in patient care?

Adele Camarena: Eye exercises can significantly improve the flexibility and strength of the eye's focusing muscles. They enhance the flexibility of the eye's smaller inner muscles, facilitating smoother transitions between near and distant vision. This is particularly beneficial for individuals who spend extended periods on computers, as it helps alleviate eye strain and maintain visual clarity.

The eye's outer muscles are responsible for directing gaze in various directions and must function in harmony to prevent issues like double vision. Eye exercises can enhance the coordination and flexibility of these muscles, promoting smoother eye movements and improved convergence—the inward turning of the eyes necessary for tasks like reading. Regular eye exercises can alleviate eye strain and support better visual performance from the classroom to the sports field.

Incorporating these exercises into daily routines can serve as a "mini gym" for the eyes, enhancing both visual comfort and efficiency across various activities.

Retinal digital imaging is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that captures high-resolution images of the innermost lining of the eye with its light sensitive cells—the retina. This imaging allows eye care professionals to examine the retina's structure, including blood vessels, the optic nerve, and the macula, providing a comprehensive view of ocular health. The retina is the only part of the body where blood vessels can be directly observed in their natural state, offering insights into both eye and systemic health.

Early detection of retinal changes through digital imaging is crucial in diagnosing eye conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and retinitis pigmentosa. Identifying these conditions in their initial stages allows for timely intervention, which can prevent or slow the progression of vision loss.

Regular retinal imaging is an essential component of comprehensive eye care, aiding in the early diagnosis and management of potentially sight-threatening diseases.

Glamour: Being the first in South Africa to complete ‘The Art of Eyewear Styling’ is impressive—how has this transformed the way you approach helping clients choose their frames?

Adele Camarena: Completing "The Art of Eyewear Styling" certification through Eva Davé's Eyewear Styling Academy has been a game-changer for our practice. This comprehensive training has revolutionised our approach to eyewear selection, transforming it from a routine task into an engaging and personalised experience for our clients.

The course equipped us with advanced techniques in style personality identification, colour analysis, and facial feature assessment. These tools have enabled us to tailor our frame recommendations to each client's unique characteristics and preferences, ensuring they not only see better but also feel confident and stylish in their eyewear.

The impact has been profound. Clients are now more enthusiastic about their eyewear choices, often expressing delight and increased satisfaction. We've noticed a significant boost in client confidence and a greater appreciation for the personalised service we provide. It's wonderful when the frame lets the client feel confident and attractive.

Glamour: What’s the process like when styling a client, and how do you ensure they leave feeling empowered?

Adele Camarena: The styling consultation process at Spectacle World includes identifying the client's style personality, analysing dominant colour types, and considering face and features to select frames that complement their unique style.

Glamour: Eyewear styling involves facial analysis, colour psychology, and more. What’s the process like when styling a patient, and how do you ensure they leave feeling empowered?

Adele Camarena: Embracing the principles of eyewear styling has not only enhanced our clients' experiences but also reaffirmed our commitment to delivering exceptional, individualised care. It's truly rewarding to see clients leave our practice feeling empowered and excited about their new look.

Glamour: What does it mean to you when a patient experiences that 'WOW' moment after finding the perfect pair of glasses?

Adele Camarena: It brings me immense joy to witness the transformative power of the right eyewear. When a client discovers a pair of frames that not only enhances their vision but also complements their personality and style, it's truly rewarding. The confidence and self-assurance that radiate from them are palpable, and it's a testament to how eyewear can positively impact one's self-image and overall well-being. As an eyewear stylist, facilitating these moments of empowerment is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my profession.

Glamour: You've helped everyone from school children to factory workers to sports professionals. How do you adapt your approach to suit such a diverse range of patients?

Adele Camarena: Spectacle World offers a range of services, including comprehensive eye exams, contact lens exams, myopia control, sports prescription eyewear, safety prescription eyewear and more, catering to a diverse clientele optical need between working environment and hobbies and activities.

Clear, comfortable and safe vision is vital. Customised prescription eyewear assists visual demands from different distances and where the age of the person has an influence on the lens design to focus clearly with either a single vision lens, bifocal or multifocal lenses. Our products comply with international safety, impact and chemical resistance guidelines. And the choices are endless, from the colour of the frames and arms, to clear, sun glare or specially tinted amber lenses.

To invest in sight is to invest in success. Eighty percent of what we know and how we perform is due to the visual information received through our eyes. Modern eyewear brings together safety, functionality, quality and design.

Glamour: What advice would you give to someone considering optometry as a career—especially young women inspired by your story?

Adele Camarena: Absolutely—pursuing a career in optometry is a decision I wholeheartedly encourage. It's an incredibly rewarding path, especially if you're passionate about making a tangible difference in people's lives. Helping someone achieve clear vision can profoundly impact their confidence, education, and overall quality of life.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of optometry is the opportunity to build lasting relationships with patients. Whether it's assisting a child in seeing the board clearly at school or helping an adult find the perfect pair of glasses that enhances their appearance and self-esteem, the positive impact you can have been substantial.

However, it's essential to recognise that optometry is a dynamic field that requires a commitment to lifelong learning. Advancements in technology, continually evolve the landscape of eye care. Staying abreast of these developments through continuing education ensures that you can provide the best possible care to your patients.

Glamour: For someone who might view spectacles as a burden, how would you help shift their perception to see eyewear as both functional and fashionable?

Adele Camarena: I believe that eyewear is not just a necessity but a powerful expression of who you are. Our team of qualified eyewear stylist consultants will guide clients towards suitable choices, recognising the vital role of colour and style in eyewear selection.

We understand that some individuals may view spectacles as a burden. However, with the latest advancements in lens technology and frame design, eyewear has become lighter, more comfortable, and more stylish than ever before. Our curated collection includes a diverse range of frames that cater to various personalities and facial features, ensuring that each client finds a pair that not only enhances their vision but also complements their unique style.

For those who prefer alternatives to traditional frames, we offer a comprehensive contact lens service. Our optometrists perform thorough assessments to determine the best fit and type of contact lenses tailored to your lifestyle and visual needs. Whether you're interested in daily disposables or extended wear options, we provide guidance to ensure comfort and optimal eye health.

Ultimately, our goal is to transform the perception of eyewear from a mere visual aid to a fashion-forward accessory that empowers you. By embracing the latest trends and technologies, we strive to provide solutions that align with your preferences and enhance your overall confidence.

Glamour: Looking ahead, what’s your vision— pun intended—for the future of Spectacle World and the field of optometry in South Africa?

Adele Camarena: A line from Andy Williams’ “The Impossible Dream” has always resonated with me: “To dream the impossible dream, to fight the unbeatable foe, to bear with unbearable sorrow, to run where the brave dare not go.” These words have guided me throughout my 30-year journey in optometry and will do so in the future.

I'm excited by what lies ahead. Optometry is advancing rapidly, with innovations like AI-driven diagnostics and wearable technology transforming patient care.

At Spectacle World, we're committed to continuous learning and embracing these advancements to provide our clients with the best possible eye care and access to the latest innovations.
