Wellness Wednesday: Registered Counsellor, Melissa Davids on the Art of Building Micro Moments

As women, we often move through our days wearing many hats, nurturer, professional, friend, daughter, leader. We pour out so much that we sometimes forget to pause, breathe, and fill our own cup. But what if wellness wasn’t only found in long breaks or big escapes, but in the small, sacred pauses in between?

Melissa Davids shares that the art of building micro moments can be mastered through tiny, intentional acts of awareness and presence. “This practice can also  help us reconnect with ourselves and the world around us,” she affirms. Below, she further enlightens…

What Are Micro Moments?

Micro moments are those simple, often-overlooked instances that bring you back to yourself ,a quiet sip of tea before the day begins, a slow breath while sitting in traffic, the feeling of sunlight on your skin, or a few seconds of stillness before a meeting. They don’t take much time, but they hold incredible power.

In a world that glorifies busyness, micro moments remind us that healing and calm don’t require hours ,they just require intentionality.

Why These Small Moments Matter

Our nervous systems are constantly responding to the pace and pressure of our environments. Without pauses, our bodies stay in survival mode , alert, tense, and emotionally drained. But each small moment of awareness tells the body, “You’re safe.” Over time, these brief pauses begin to regulate our emotions, quiet our minds, and open our hearts.

Micro moments also deepen our connections with others. A genuine smile, a few seconds of eye contact, or simply listening without multitasking can shift the energy in a conversation, creating warmth and safety where before there was distance.

The Science of Small Shifts

Studies in positive psychology show that consistent moments of positive emotion, even brief ones, have a cumulative effect on our well-being. They strengthen our resilience, improve emotional balance, and help us recover faster from stress. The more we practice micro moments, the easier it becomes to return to calm, even on difficult days.

How to Cultivate Micro Moments

Here are a few gentle ways to weave micro moments into your everyday rhythm:

  1. Morning Presence: Before checking your phone, take a few deep breaths and set one intention for the day.
  2. Gratitude Glimpses: Notice one thing that brings you peace , a scent, a sound, or a small joy.
  3. Connection Breaks: Put down your phone and be fully present with someone you love, even if only for a minute.
  4. Mindful Movement: Stretch your shoulders, unclench your jaw, or go for a brief walk between tasks.
  5. Evening Reflection: Before bed, name three moments that made your heart feel lighter today.

Wellness is not about perfection,  it’s about presence. It’s about learning to find rest and beauty in the middle of ordinary days. As a counsellor, I’ve seen how these small, intentional pauses can transform not just our mental health, but the way we love, lead, and live.

So this week, give yourself permission to slow down. Notice the tiny details. Breathe between the busy.Because your peace is not found in the next big moment , it’s being built, gently and quietly, in the small ones you choose today.
