Three’s a trend: Solange joins NYFW’s blonde brigade

Having firmly made her mark as the queen of the Afro, Solange Knowles has swapped her trademark dark curls for platinum blonde braids and twists, which she debuted whilst performing at Maryam Nassir Zadeh’s spring/summer 2018 show on Tuesday during New York Fashion Week.

Singing her hit  Rise in a surprise performance at Manhattan’s East River Park track – the show’s location – the singer paired the new look with winged sunglasses and had decorative beads and shells woven into the braids.

And she isn’t the only one to have showcased a dramatic colour change during the new-season shows. Kim Kardashian West showed off waist-length silver-blonde locks at Tom Ford’s show on the first day of Fashion Week – styled with a skin-tight PVC dress, of course – which she has since worn poker-straight, in a ponytail and in mussed-up waves. Meanwhile, the perennially platinum-blonde model Stella Lucia hit the Alexander Wang catwalk with a new “rose quartz” wash dyed especially for the show by London-based colourist Josh Wood.

No mousey hues or subtle highlights will do – these blondes are about bold colours, vibrant washes and the sort of hair maintenance that’ll require bulk purchases of purple shampoo and frequent root touch-ups. If there has ever been a time to completely transform your hair colour, it’s evidently during New York Fashion Week.
