Women versus cancer! It’s a battle we will all have to face as mothers, daughters and friends.
We all fear the ‘C’ word, but the most important thing to know is that you are not powerless to fight it. You can in fact significantly reduce your risk by keeping a healthy weight, exercising, and eating right. Here are five important tips that can help reduce your breast cancer risk:
1 Eat more fruit and vegetables
The contain fibre, powerful antioxidants and phytochemicals.
2 Go for carotenoid-rich foods
These include mango, butternut, peppers, pumpkin, spinach, sweet potato, tomato or carrot – have at least one a day.
3 Watch your weight
A study showed that women who gain 10-25kg after the age of 18 had almost double the risk of post-menopausal breast cancer compared to women who gained only a few kilos.
4 Exercise four hours a week
Studies have shown a reduced risk of breast cancer among women who exercise regularly. But you don’t have to tackle a marathon – even taking a short, brisk walk a day will benefit you.
