7 Beauty pageant tips from Bokang Montjang

Rolling out retail’s biggest red carpet yet, Eastgate Shopping Centre is in search of a fresh new face for 2017. A popular annual event on the fashion and retail calendar, the Eastgate Look of Fashion will be hosted on Saturday 23 September 2017, giving hopefuls between 17 and 25 the chance to claim the coveted title.

We asked Bokang Montjane, one of the competition’s previous winners, as well as Miss South Africa 2010, exactly what it takes to scoop this particular crown.

What can beauty pageants do for entrants?

Beauty pageants help to build confidence and self-esteem, from the way you speak in front of people to learning how to be comfortable in your own skin, and embracing the fact that you are unique and special. I know from experience that they can change your life, and give you the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

What three things should you always do when entering a pageant?

- Stay true to yourself.

- Don’t compare yourself with fellow contestants.

- Enjoy the moment and have fun.

What should you never do?

Never give an answer that you think the judges would like to hear. Instead stand by your beliefs and opinions, and make sure you back them up with an outstanding motivation.

What did winning Eastgate Look of Fashion do for your career?

It took me closer to my ultimate goal of winning Miss South Africa.

Has the image of pageants and pageant winners changed?

Not necessarily – it’s the same crown and sash every year, it’s just that different individuals are chosen, and naturally each one reigns in her own way and leaves her own legacy.

Do you have any advice for this year’s entrants?

Get on that stage, be authentic and honest in all that you do, and have fun!
