Homegrown natural hair products

When it comes to beauty, we tend to put a large focus on cosmetics and skincare from the Western world, but we might want to set our sights closer to home when looking for mind-blowingly good beauty gems. The continent of Africa is rich in natural hair products that will leave your tresses feeling strong, moisturised and nourished. Here are three of our favourites…

Shea Butter

Probably the most well known African beauty product, shea butter is not only good for your skin but works wonders on curls and coils. This miracle butter, which hails from Uganda, Ethiopia, Ghana and 16 other countries on the continent, combats frizz, encourages rapid hair growth, and also acts as a repair treatment for dry and brittle locks.

Marula Oil

This wonder oil comes from the marula tree which grows in Southern Africa. Even though it’s been available for centuries, the oil has only risen to prominence in the past couple of years. On styled hair, use a few drops to add shine to dull tresses. The lightweight oil is very moisturising, so it works well as a monthly or bi-weekly oil treatment.

African Black Soap

This soap has made a major comeback into popular beauty culture. Predominantly praised for its skincare benefits, african black soap can be used on hair as well. Run under warm water and work up a lather, then apply to wet hair for a natural, nourishing sulfate-free shampoo.
