How to do Bantu knots like Sbahle Mpisane

If you’ve never attempted the trend, we’ve created an easy step by step guide to help you get the look.

Remember the time when influencer and Fitness Bunnie founder, Sbahle Mpisane ditched her signature bob for Bantu knots and captioned an Instagram picture of her rocking her natural tresses, saying: “New month, new look”?

Although it’s considered a new trend in pop culture, sported by Hollywood stars like Blac Chyna and Rihanna, Bantu knots have been around for centuries. Women of Southern and Central Africa were, in fact, the first to wear the look.

If you’ve never attempted the trend, we’ve created an easy step by step guide to help you get the look.

Step 1: Wash, condition, and detangle

To ensure that product build-up isn’t visible, make sure that you concentrate on your scalp when shampooing. Lock in moisture with a leave-in conditioner, then detangle your hair with a wide tooth comb.

Step 2: Part hair

Using the end of a rattail comb, divide hair into small sections.

Step 3: Coil and twist

Apply a gel or pomade to each individual section, then coil and twist each piece of hair, and secure with bobby pins or a hair tie.
