TEST This foolproof 10-step guide will have you tie-dying your clothes at home like Kendall Jenner and Victoria Beckham

For those of you with your finger on the fashion pulse, you've no doubt noticed tie-dye's triumphant return to sartorial conscience. Brought back by the likes of Stella McCartney and Prada for their most recent collections, it seems that taste of nostalgia couldn't have come at a better time as we all look to our favourite childhood memories (e.g. beaded jewellery too) for a sense of comfort.

But unlike several of the season's most popular trends, tie-dye is not just for the super rich. It's not even solely reserved for the 'super-fashionable'. This is a look that can be, and is, worn by quite literally everyone. And the even better news? You can create it yourself at home.

A great pastime for those of us - all of us - who are confined to our houses right now, it's an activity that'll not only keep you occupied for the afternoon, but will also encourage your creativity and leave you with a great new outfit afterwards.

Unsurprisingly, Kendall Jenner - a huge fan of tie-dye - got in on the action last weekend, decorating some of her old white t-shirts with splashes of colour.

Steps to tie-dying your clothes

The Beckham family were't far behind, having had possibly the most activity-filled few days we've ever seen with hair-dying, baking and now tie-dying on the agenda.

With Victoria Beckham leading the troops you knew it'd be a chic affair, and both Cruz and Harper did their mum proud as they smeared and splattered bold colours all over some old VB tees.

What you'll need...

Hand dyes (we love Dylon Dyes, and recommend using more than one colour)

A clean, white cotton or linen shirt

250g of ordinary salt

Glass measuring jug

Large rubber bands

Rubber gloves

Plastic bottle

Step 1:

Wet the clean shirt, squeeze out any excess water and leave damp.

Step 2:

Bind sections of the shirt tightly with rubber bands – the areas of the shirt protected by bands will escape being dyed and create the pattern.

Step 3:

Wearing rubber gloves, dissolve the dye in 500ml of warm water in the measuring jug, mix in 250g (4tbsp) of salt and stir well.

Step 4:

Pour the mixture into a plastic bottle to enable easy application of the dye to the shirt.

Step 5:

Repeat the dye and salt mixture if adding additional colours. We recommend jumping on the season's tonal trend, and opting for varying shades of the same colour (think bold, candy and pastel pink).

Step 6:

Rinse the measuring jug and rest the bound shirt in it.

Step 7:

Carefully pour the dye mixture onto the shirt to create the desired look

Step 8:

Leave shirt to sit for a minimum of one hour to allow the dye to seep into the fabric.

Step 9:

Without untying fabric, rinse in cold water until the water runs clear, then untie and wash in warm water.

Step 10:

Leave to dry - make sure it is away from direct sunlight.
