Toner has long occupied a slightly awkward place in the bathroom cabinet. We know it goes somewhere after cleansing, but ask exactly what it does and many of us become as vague as someone explaining why they texted their ex at 01h00.
The confusion is understandable. Traditional toners were generally designed to remove lingering residue and leave the skin feeling refreshed. Treatment tonics, however, have a more purposeful job description.
They’re lightweight, leave-on formulas containing ingredients selected to address specific concerns, such as dehydration, sensitivity, excess oil, congestion, dullness or uneven texture. Think of a treatment tonic as the first active step in your routine: lighter than a serum, applied after cleansing and designed to prepare the skin for what follows.
“Many people either skip this step because they don’t understand it or choose a tonic without considering what their skin needs,” says Kamia Soobramoney of Fundamentals Skincare. “A treatment tonic shouldn’t be included simply because skincare tradition says so. It should have a defined purpose within the routine, whether that’s hydration, calming, antioxidant support, pore care or exfoliation.”
Cleanse, treat, moisturise – it needn’t become a chemistry project
A treatment tonic is applied after cleansing and before serums, moisturiser and sunscreen. Depending on the formula, it can be pressed gently into the skin with clean hands or applied using a cotton pad. It stays on the skin and isn’t rinsed away.
Hydrating and calming formulas may suit daily morning and evening use. Exfoliating tonics require a more measured introduction, particularly for beginners or sensitive skin. Begin slowly, follow the product directions and avoid introducing several strong active ingredients at once.
In other words, one purposeful tonic is helpful. Three exfoliating acids layered together because TikTok seemed enthusiastic may be less so.
Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen remains essential, particularly when exfoliating acids form part of the routine.
A treatment tonic for the actual concern

The quiet overachiever between cleanser and serum
The treatment tonic may not have the drama of a face mask or the glamorous reputation of a serum, but it can make a meaningful contribution when chosen carefully.
The important question isn’t, “Do I need a toner?” It’s, “What does my skin need this step to accomplish?”
Once that question is answered, the mysterious bottle between cleanser and serum becomes considerably less mysterious – and far more useful.
