How to keep your cuticles healthy

You’ve probably never give your cuticles too much thought, but they do serve quite an important purpose. They keep bacteria out and protect the nail bed.

The first and only rule you should know about cuticles is to never, ever cut them. As we said, they are there for a reason. Hack them away, and you could invite infection and fungus in (yuck).

The best way to keep them healthy is to gently push them back with a rubber hoof stick. It’s best to do this just after you’ve showered, when they are soft and pliable. If you do this often, you’ll never have to cut them.

Then keep them in check by applying a nourishing cuticle oil or cream a few times a day. (If you forget during the day, just make sure you apply before you go to sleep.) We love The Body Shop’s Almond Nail and Cuticle Pen, R120.
