The makeup techniques that worked in your twenties aren't necessarily the ones that will serve you best in your forties, fifties and beyond—and that's not a bad thing. As our skin changes, so do the products, colours and application methods that flatter our features.
From choosing softer eyeliner shades to embracing skinimalism and rethinking shimmer eyeshadow, a few small adjustments can make a significant difference to how makeup wears on mature skin. These were some of the standout lessons shared at the recent Woolworths Beauty Masterclass in Durban, where experts unpacked the beauty trends and techniques worth knowing right now.
While colour trends and fresh makeup looks were certainly on the agenda, much of the conversation centred around a topic that often gets overlooked: how makeup can work with mature skin, not against it.
One trend that came up repeatedly was skinimalism. After years of full-coverage foundations and heavily layered routines dominating beauty culture, the focus is no longer on covering every perceived imperfection, but on letting skin look like skin.
For mature skin in particular, that shift makes perfect sense. Lightweight foundations, skin tints and targeted concealer tend to sit more naturally on the skin, whereas heavier formulas can emphasise texture and settle into fine lines. The goal is a fresh, healthy-looking complexion that still feels like you.

The discussion also touched on one of the most common makeup frustrations: lipstick feathering around the mouth. The good news? It doesn't mean retiring your favourite lip colours.
A lip liner that closely matches your natural lip tone can make all the difference. Not only does it help define the lips, but it also creates a barrier that keeps lipstick from migrating throughout the day. For those looking to add a little fullness, a subtle overline at the cupid's bow and the centre of the lower lip can create a naturally plump effect without venturing into fine lines around the lips.
As for colour, there are no hard-and-fast rules. Rosy nudes, berries and plum tones often complement mature skin beautifully, but finding the right lipstick is still a matter of personal preference and a little experimentation. Fortunately, virtual try-on technology has made the process much easier than it once was.

The eyes were another area where traditional beauty advice came under scrutiny.
For decades, black eyeliner has been considered a makeup-bag essential, but it isn't always the most flattering choice as our features change over time. Softer shades such as deep brown, charcoal, plum and navy can offer the same definition while creating a more effortless, modern finish.
Application matters, too. Rather than drawing a stark line across the lid, softly smudging liner into the lash line can help create subtle definition while making the eyes appear more lifted.

The conversation also challenged another long-standing beauty myth: that mature skin should avoid shimmer altogether.
In reality, it's less about avoiding shimmer and more about choosing the right formula. Frosted finishes and chunky glitter can draw attention to texture, while satin and softly luminous shadows tend to reflect light in a far more flattering way.
Soft taupes, warm bronzes, rosy browns and champagne tones remain favourites for a reason. They brighten the eyes, add dimension and deliver polish without overwhelming the rest of the face.

If there was one takeaway from the masterclass, it was that makeup doesn't need to become more restrictive with age. In many ways, it becomes more personal.
