5 Essential winter nail care tips for strong, healthy nails

This winter we're experiencing cold, dry hands and frequently moisurising our skin to keep it from looking ashy — and if you’re anything like me, your nails are probably suffering too. From brittle tips to flaky cuticles, the colder months can be tough on our hands. But with the right care, your nails can still thrive, even in the chilliest weather. Here, we give you five simple essential winter nail care tips to ensure you give your nails the TLC they deserve this season.

Hydration is key

Much like your hands, your nails and cuticles are begging for hydration. Invest in a rich, non-greasy hand cream like Aveeno's restoring hand cream. To add to the hydration routine, add a nourishing cuticle oil to the list (look for ingredients like jojoba, vitamin E, or almond oil). Keep these products in your bag, on your desk, or by your bed — as long as frequently reapply.

Get a good pair of gloves

It might seem obvious, but gloves are your first line of defence. Cold air strips moisture from your hands and nails, and harsh winds can make cuticles peel. Consider wearing gloves when you’re outside to really lock in the moisture. For extra protection, consider using rubber gloves when dealing with harsh chemicals.

Invest in a basic manicure kit

In winter, nails tend to become more brittle, so normalise regular trimming and shaping to help prevent painful breakage. We recommend investing in a small, convenient manicure kit. This is a must-have product every woman (and man) should have in their bag. A manicure kit has all the basic tools you need to maintain your nails without having to go to the nail salon. This kit allows you to do just enough to keep your nails at bay.

Avoid nail biting

Cold weather and dry skin is a recipe for wanting to pick your skin or bite your nails. Biting not only weakens your nails but also damages the skin around them, making your fingers more prone to infection and hangnails (a small piece of skin or nail next to a fingernail or toenail caused by dry skin, ingrown nails, or trauma to the skin). To help resist the urge to bite your nails, consider using anti nail biting products like Trind's Nail Repair Anit-Bite polish. Alternatively, applying bitter aloe to your fingernails should also do the trick.

Hydrating nail mask

Yes, nail masks exist — and they’re worth trying. Just like face masks, they’re packed with moisture and nutrients like Skin Republic's Nail and Cuticle hand mask that has argan oil and vitamin E. You can also DIY a mask using coconut oil and honey for a deeply nourishing treatment.
