Spoilt Hair and Nails stylist, Gilbert Mofubelu, talks curls, care and colour

Get your hair trimmed regularly

“Normally you should visit your salon for a trim every six weeks to keep your hair looking healthy and split-end free,” Gilbert advises. “But, if you’re growing you hair, I recommend visiting every second month, provided you use a split-end mending product and treatment in between. Kevin Murphy Young Again Infused Treatment Oil

(R450) is great for split ends; it will also give your hair shine and protection from heat-styling and UV rays. I also like Kevin Murphy Born Again Essential Treatment

(R550), which is paraben free, for replenishing damaged locks.”

The product I’m loving right now

“It has to be Kevin Murphy Hair Resort Spray

(R350). I normally use it after doing beach waves, because it gives nice separation and makes waves look more natural. It has a nice summer smell, too – it basically smells like a holiday!” Gilbert says. “My favourite product to use on curls is Kevin Murphy Motion Lotion Curl Enhancing Lotion

(R350). It really does create and maintain the perfect curl,” he adds.

Don’t wash curls every day

“How often you wash your hair depends on if you have oily hair or a dry scalp,” Gilbert explains. “Since curly hair is naturally dry, you should only wash it every third day,” Gilbert says. “But, for those with an oily scalp, a daily wash is usually needed.”

Base your hair colour on your skin tone

“Everyday hair colours are pretty safe, but if you opt for a fashion colour, like a vibrant, almost scarlet-hued red, you should think about your complexion as different shades suit different skin tones,” Gilbert explains. “That shade of red, for example, would really complement someone with fair skin and blue or green eyes.”

Use products to help your colour last longer

“If the colour’s permanent, it will last for about six weeks, depending on your regrowth,” Gilbert says. “But if you use a semi-permanent colour, it will only last for up to 10 washes. Using a good colour-extending shampoo and conditioner will help lengthen the life of your colour, keeping it looking vibrant up until your next visit to the salon. TRY Joico K-Pak Color Therapy Shampoo (R255) and Conditioner (R260).”

Don’t ask for a hair makeover unless you are 100% certain

“A makeover means changing your whole look: hair – colour and cut – so make sure that you are ready for the transformation. And make sure you go to a stylist you trust – a good stylist will choose what’s best for you,” Gilbert says.
