Want healthy hair? Cut it!

Too scared to cut your hair because you’re actually trying to grow it? Here’s what you should know.

Go to a pro

You need to trim your hair every eight to twelve weeks. Using a sharp scissors is important. The biggest mistake women make when trimming their own fringes or cutting their child’s hair is using the kitchen scissors. Fixing a home job can often lead to more length being taken off and not only is this stressful for the client, but also for the stylist.

Nip split ends in the butt

There are 7 layers of cuticle on every single healthy hair strand that serves the purpose of protecting the hair from environmental, chemical or mechanical damage. Split ends can go into the hair shaft up to 3cms from the tip of the ends. If they aren’t trimmed regularly they can go even further up the hair shaft and cause the layers of the cuticle to separate from the inside out which can lead major hair damage. This damage can be the cause of poor colour results, dehydration, premature breakage when styling and frizz even after a hair product is applied.

Cutting doesn’t slow growth

Hair grows 1.25cm a month for most people with the exception of a few due to a very fast or really slow metabolism. The rate at which your hair grows is strongly determined by your DNA and not how often you trim your hair. Vitamins help to strengthen the follicle from the inside which will encourage the growth of healthy hair, but the absorption of this is still determined by your genetics. Having a haircut will not stop your hair from growing. A poor diet, bad hair care and over processing of colour are the main factors in why hair does not grow even if regular trimming happens.

Use the right products

If you are not using a shampoo system that is meant for your hair, you are contributing to the damage of your cuticle layers. Everyone has different and those needs are widely determined by the type of care your hair goes through. Using the incorrect products will leave your hair vulnerable to damage and splitting ends which will lead to need for a hair cut.

Make way for new hair

By trimming your hair regularly your hair losing the old hair and leaving room for the new hair to flourish. If there are no split ends to be careful of, you can proceed with your hair treatments such as Brazilian blow dries and colour treatments because your hair is healthy enough to hold on to the good stuff that these products have to offer.

Choose a great style

Maintaining the latest hairstyle will only come from getting the right hair cut and going back for a regular trim. The right hair cut can do wonders for your image if it suits your face and body shape.
