Your no-fear guide to DIY hair colour

Worried about the money, maintenance and mess that comes with dyeing your own hair? With these foolproof tips you won’t be! We’ve got your hair colour phobias covered.

If you’re afraid of… damaging your hair

“A demi-permanent colour is a gentle alternative to typical hair dye – it causes less damage because it doesn’t penetrate as deeply and enhances condition and shine,” says Mark Adrain from Mark Adrian Hair Design (021 683 4264). Plenty of DIY products contain hydrators and rich oils that keep hair nourished. And remember: if you’ve coloured your hair, you need to deeply condition it weekly and use a heat protector before styling.

If you’re afraid of… making a mess

The answer is in the prep. Wear an old T-shirt and cover your sink with paper towel to catch any splatter. Read the directions and gather supplies (a mirror; a timer; towels and a comb) before you start. Oh, and try a mousse colour. They don’t drip!

If you’re afraid of… colour fading too quickly

“Colour locking products are vital for the shine and longevity of dyed hair,” says Mark. “And remember: chlorine in pools will fade and even change the colour of dyed hair, so apply conditioner first!”

If you’re afraid of… hating your new colour

“Temporary dyes let you experiment without permanent commitment,” says mark. Colour sprays and chalks work with weaves too so you can go wild (without worrying about that upcoming wedding)!
