GLAMOUR Exclusive: 5 Minutes with Uncle Waffles

More about Uncle Waffles in her own words.

Just a couple of months ago, a viral video of Lungelihle Zwane, better known as DJ Uncle Waffles, doing the most in a steller DJ set got over 4 million views and put the rising star’s career on the map.

The 21-year-old talent has since been putting in the work to build her career and has been on tour in South Africa as well as other African countries. Below, we chat with Uncle Waffles about her career, her take on the Amapiano movement and her personal style.

You went from a 5 minute DJ set to a verified star in a matter of days, what has the experience been like?

It’s been so overwhelming, but gratitude still remains the most prominent emotion. I feel so so blessed, above all things.

Is the trajectory of your DJ career and becoming the most sought after DJ of the moment something you anticipated?

It’s something I prayed would happen, I don’t feel like I’m the most “sought out” though. It comes with a lot of emotion but having this much work coming in is amazing.

Why did you choose music and specifically DJ’ing as a career path?

I feel it chose me, how it all happened, me being able to learn. It’s crazy but that’s all a story for another day.

Which music genre do you gravitate towards and why?

I’m actually a very big hip hop head but Amapiano feels very spiritual.

What is your take on the amapiano sound and movement and the influence it has on youth culture?

I think it’s the sound of “open doors” for young vocalists, producers. It’s a space where there’s no gatekeeping, just love. Just opportunity, because it has room for everyone.

How do you describe your personal style?

Hot hahaha... 2000s video vixen sometimes.

Why the stage name Uncle Waffles?

My friends came up with it, I genuinely need to come up with a better story because this one is very anticlimactic

What are you working on right now and what can we expect from Uncle Waffles in 2022?

A lot of things that will diversify and grow my brand.
